Pennichuck Corporation has been working to improve the quality of its backup source water, the Pennichuck Brook, for many years. The primary framework used is the “Multiple Barrier Approach” developed under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The company created a comprehensive Watershed Management Plan in 1998 that was consistently updated in subsequent years. The multiple barriers include: the development of an overarching watershed program followed by individual subwatershed studies, the development and implementation of a comprehensive water quality monitoring program and extensive public education and outreach. Several of the subwatershed studies and updates resulted in the construction of stormwater treatment systems to address problem areas in the Pennichuck Brook watershed.
